Commanded by Decimus Iunius Brutus, the Romans arrived in Lisbon in 138 BC. Its ideal geographical location rapidly made it one of the Hispania’s more prominent territories, granting it special juridical and administrative status.

In the summer of 1147, King Afonso Henriques’ troops besieged Lisbon for five long months. The Moorish Wall, both as a defence and a permanent fixture of Lisbon’s urban landscape, played a major role in this crucial period of the city’s history, when the Moorish rule was replaced by the Portuguese domination.
